Surviving Auditions!

The phrase 'survival of the fittest' is probably quite apt when applied to auditions!

If you've been specifically called to an audition as a result of an application or someone seeing your profile or CV, then you've already got a head start as it means that there's interest in you.

However, if you're attending an 'open' audition it means that you could be one of literally hundreds (or even thousands if it's X Factor!), and you need to make sure that you are prepared, confident and relaxed. Open auditions can be really crowded, and often hectic. If you're not good 'in crowds' and get stressed out then you should think carefully before attending. You may have to queue for a long time, and when you do get seen you may have very little time to perform.

You need to think about what you're auditioning for. If it's a play, musical, tv show try and learn something about the character in advance. Whatever the audition is for, always try to get some background information on what's required of the role you're auditioning for.

Make sure you prepare an audition piece that shows your skills off to their best advantage.

Try to avoid attending auditions that you're really not suited for; not only is it demoralising but it can be a waste of everyone's time.

Make sure you take a couple of copies of your CV with you (see here for preparing CVs).

Another thing I'd really recommend is to look your best ... not only can it help you stand out, but 'feeling good about yourself' will boost your self-confidence - and it will show!
